History of the Church

The Church was originally formed in Fairbridge Street, Middlesbrough in an upstairs room in the 1950's.  In the 1960's as the Spiritual Movement was recognised by the Government, Alf Foreman bought 56 Gresham Road with his bonus from ICI at the cost of £2,200.

For the next 15 years the front room of the building was used as a Santuary of the church.  At this point Alf decided to make a gift of the church to Greater World Spiritual Movement with the proviso that the building could never be used for any other purpose.

It became clear in 1991 that the building did not meet Fire Regulations.  The Committee decided to undertake a refurbishment of the premises and make the ground floor of the premises into one big room and move the kitchen, toilet and healing room to the first floor level.

By this time Alf Foreman was quite elderly and was stepping back from the church owing to health problems. Since Alf had stepped back the church has a number of President’s some notable one’s are Ken Briggs and Betty Campbell.

In 2000 Greater World decided they no longer wanted to control the church and as it could not be sold it was offered to the committee of the church for a peppercorn rent for next 50 years.

The President Betty Gunn and the Committee ensured this was undertaken in a legal framework by solicitors drawing up the necessary legal documents, one of which had to have a charity status (ELITE SPIRITUALIST CHURCH).

The charity which was formed had 7 Trustees to begin with and they are an excellent group of people who dedicated themselves to the church and made it a very successful venture. We have a very successful weekly Development Class and Awareness Class.

Through the hard work of the Trustees of the church they were able to extend the building to add a disabled facility to the church in 2005.
